This is my signature poetry technique writing from imagery. I use it all the time in workshops with my students. It quickly produces amazing powerful results.
I use it all the time in workshops with my students, as it quickly produces amazing powerful results.
This poetry teaching technique is my favourite because there is strong scaffolding to develop your student’s skills in writing poetry. It also is a mini lesson in what I consider to be the real powerful strengths in writing poetry.
This technique to learn writing poetry always works for me because students can quickly start writing and quickly witness the power of their writing to move other people.
Key elements of the technique invite the students to use
- sensory line
- putting yourself in the poem
- uses sound
- can’t repeat a word
- a hope for the future at the end
Here is an example of a poem a Grade 5 student wrote using this technique ( not happy this one is here- will try and dig out another)
So Still
Eyes closed
hair wisping in breeze sunshine
dimpling my cheeks just the wish for
warmth and quiet a bee buzzing nearby
for a moment there is gentle peace.
I would love to see the poetry writing in action or the final poem – post up your pictures and images on instagram and tag me @glitter_rainy and tag #poetrywithlorraine
