Incident poetry writing technique is really effective for getting students from Grade 3 to Grade 6 writing poems.
It works really well because is children are quickly drawn into the writing activity and have fun. It demystifies the idea that poetry is hard to write.
Incident poems are 5 lines long and 14 words in total. They demonstrate poetry can be short and concise, yet quickly evoke a response from a reader.
Here is an example of a poem a Grade 4 student wrote using this technique in five minutes.
Energy
Bending bodies
At the studio
Looking at mirrors
Warm up before dancing
Hetty Waters
I would love to see the poetry writing in action or the final poem – post up your pictures and images on instagram and tag me @glitter_rainy and tag #poetrywithlorraine

This is my signature poetry technique writing from imagery. I use it all the time in workshops with my students. It quickly produces amazing powerful results.

This is a great technique to write a new poem of your own using a published poem that you like and patterning it with your own words.
